I’ve been on a real retro 8-bit kick lately, so this recent trend of releasing video game “demakes” has definitely struck a chord with me. Whether we’re talking official releases like Mega Man 9 and 10 and Dark Void Zero, or fan-made projects like Portal: The Flash Version and the inexplicable new Goonies game for the MSX, I am continually impressed by how authentic some of these games are.
Former Microsoft VP Ed Fries might take the cake, however, with his new version of Halo for the Atari 2600. Not only can you play the Flash version online or download the ROM to play it on an Atari emulator, but he actually got a limited number of physical cartridges produced for the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Collectors must be losing their minds over this.
