Even with the advantage of being 320kbps vs 192kbps, I severely disagree with the protesters assessment. The 'remastered versions' sound flat and lifeless to me, less clear, and yes 'quieter'. I dont mean that being loud inherently makes something better, but its part of an overall experience that robs the life out of what I honestly think is a very good Metallica album. I'm both an indie snob and a metal snob, and I can actually assert its a lot better than a lot of the acclaimed stuff from this year, including the new TV on the Radio album.
