Do you live in or near the Toronto area? Do you enjoy beating on people with blunt objects? Are you a massive geek with nothing better to do on a Friday night? Well then head on over to the front steps of the Royal Ontario Museum this Friday November 16th at 9:30 pm and take part in an epic lightsaber battle courtesy of the folks from Newmindspace! Apparently they organize all sorts of quirky events like subway parties and public pillow fights, and this is their latest brainchild. I don’t really understand how it works, all I know is that they hand out large cardboard tubes that are painted so that they glow under black lights, and then people go at it, until all the lightsabers are destroyed. It’s free, although donations are requested so that they can eventually afford to buy better quality lightsabers!
I haven’t decided yet if I actually want to make the trip to T Dot to witness this hilarious scene. I mean, I want to go just to take pictures and cover it for Film Junk, but I’m afraid of what it might do for my image! Clearly it would be worth it just to see the hardcore Star Wars fans who really get into it, suiting up in their Jedi or Sith outfits, and possibly attempting to use actual martial arts moves. It’s one step away from live action roleplaying I suppose, although on a massive scale (depending on how many geeks turn up).
Apparently this has been done before with a much bigger crowd at Burning Man 2007, although from the videos I’ve seen, all the participants were a bunch of wusses. I had better see some dismembered limbs in Toronto, otherwise I’m asking for my money back.
Datarock are also playing at the after party, which is kind of cool.

Awesome. I wonder if I can convince my wife to let the kids stay up this late on a Friday night…
(BTW - Friday is the 16th, not 17th). Hope to see you there!
You have to cover this. Get some Film Junk alumni together and go fight it out like little boys. Sean Dwyer vs. Reed Farrington!
Man, if it was possible I’d love to see a giant *real* lightsaber battle, shot with Jay’s HD camera.
Fixed the date, thanks for spotting that Michael.
Henrik: I don’t think Jay wants to go, and Reed Farrington very rarely makes public appearances. But I think I will try and make it and bring along a skeleton crew with me.
Sean, you have to be the guy who shows up with a painted lead pipe and be the last man standing. If not, I might consider doing it.
I’ll be the guy who brings a gun to a knifefight.
So what was it like??
We didn’t end up going… I had to work late and no one else seemed overly excited about it. One less chance to mock people who are nerdier than me… oh well.
